Programming A Non-Fullscreen iOS Movie Player That Even Runs In Portrait Mode

Something that was the bane of existence for many iPhone developers before OS 3.2 was the fact that the built in iPhone movie player could not run in a portion of the screen.

Whenever a movie was played using the built in player functionality it would open up full screen.

Having a movie player force it’s way to full screen was something which just seemed to take away from the flow of things within many an app.

In OS 3.2 functionality to easily play movies in a non-fullscreen way was added.  Unfortunately this also caused some methods to become deprecated.

John Muchow has created a nice explanation with some great sample code of a movie player in action, and he’s also explained how to take care of those older movie players so they work without problem in iOS 4.0
