There’s been many iPhone development success stories, but what makes this one different is that the developer is willing to share the exact process that made them successful.  I find this story particularly interesting, because i was looking for someone successful who’s app I could model.

This story is about the founder of Happytapper, and creator of the highly successful Gratitude Journal app, Carla White.  Carla’s Gratitude Journal was one of the top seller’s in it’s category for an extremely long period of time, and the app was so critically acclaimed that even Oprah took a look at, decided to promote her app.  Another thing that makes this story so great is that Carla isn’t even a software developer, and although she designed the interface for the Gratitude Journal, was not an interface designer, and had to learn how to properly use Photoshop.  Carla is like many people getting into iPhone development, she was not building her app off a popular brand name, or software franchise.  If you’re a developer than you definitely should have an edge on Carla, if not she also goes into the methodology she used to actually get her app created for $500.

So how exactly did Carla make a hit app?  Well, there are many reasons which she goes into detail in her iPhone app secrets book, and three in particular stuck out to me, because these are three factors that many aspiring app developers seem to forget:

1) Carla fully understood her market, and used the ideas of others in her market to create her app.  Carla was able to get her target market talking about her app, and providing feedback before her app was even created.  The end result was that she was able to build up hype for her app, and create a better product.

2) Carla cared far more about her app looked far more than what fancy features could be included.  Let’s face it, due to the price, these are impulse buys, and when it comes to impulse buys what is most important is what is on the cover just look at the rack next time you leave the supermarket.  Sexy screenshots are every bit, if not more important than creating an innovative app.. just look at Tipulator.

3) Carla did not insist on her app being perfect.  This may seem counterintuitive, but perfection is a successful app killer, and oftentimes the killer of successful businesses.   Insisting on perfection will only delay your app’s release, and increase your costs.  It’s been said that the first 90% of software development takes 10% of time while the last 10% takes 90% of the time, and if you’re a developer you probably already understand this.

There are many reasons why Carla has been successful, and you can read more about it on her Inside secrets to an iphone app website by clicking here
