Just in case there’s any graphics designers interested, I have finally finished off some more of the contract work, and with a lighter load, my next ambition is to do some iPhone game programming.

My intent is to develop a number of iPhone games in a short amount of time.  Ultimately all will be open sourced, released as 0.99 cent or free games, and have coinciding tutorials written.  I actually created a very simple game this evening in a couple of hours that could already use the styling of an artist.  I’ve planned out the next few games, and they shouldn’t take to long, all the games will be 2D, the first few written wiith Cocoa, and the rest using Cocos2D.

So just in case there’s any graphic artists out there reading interested in the possibility of some publicity and possibly profit from iPhone graphics work feel free to contact me.  Please understand that my intent with the games is for publicity, although I do believe future work customizing/rebranding these games is possible after talking with a few peers.

I updated the iPhone Objective-C 2.0 Cheat Sheet Today which I created earlier to accompany my video on transitioning to Objective-C. 

Please watch this video if you are new to Objective-C as I explain things in more detail during the video. I have updated the sheet to include syntax examples from Objective-C which are similar to those in other languages.  You will find short examples from C/C++ and Java that will allow those knowledgable with those languages to pick up on much of the Objective-C syntax immediately. I am constantly looking to improve this cheat sheet, and would like to hear your opinion on ways that you think this sheet could be improved, or things you feel should be added.  My goal is to turn this into the best possible cheat sheet. Also, I am going to create an advanced iPhone Objective-C   cheat sheet later on, so please if there is something you feel should be included on that sheet mention it below.

Hi everybody,

I got a couple of e-mails asking what Objective-C categories are, as a couple of developers ran into them when looking up stuff using the jump to definition, research assistant and help in Xcode.

I didn’t explain them in my first Objective-C tutorial as they are not too identical to something that already exists in C/C++ or Java, and they are not neccessary to use in your code.

However they are frequently used by Apple so you will run into them in your code, so in this video I explain the details, and talk about why you might want to use Categories in your code.

Ok, here’s the first of two videos where I go through and analyze the source code provided by Apple in it’s HelloWorld file.

We look at quite a few new terms here, such as the @class declaration, and dealloc, along with some modifiers used with the @property declaration.

This is the second tutorial on iPhone application development.

This tutorial is geared towards someone with a basic understanding of C/C++ or Java and object oriented principles.  It is a basic overview of some Objective-C syntax that someone transitioning from another language is unlikely to be familiar with.

If you’re unfamiliar with C/C++ or Java a great resource is the extensive http://www.learncpp.com/.

Please note that this cheatsheet will be updated quickly as we continue through the iphone tutorials, and this first iteration is designed only to cover some basic syntax.

Optional Exercise:
Go through the Hello World sample source code  for the iPhone using the understanding gained from the video, referencing the cheat sheet if  necessary along with the Xcode research assistant (see first tutorial if you are unfamiliar with it). In  the next tutorial we will be going through this code line by line.

This tutorial is a first step towards getting an App in the Apple App Store.  It is an extremely brief tutorial meant for those at the absolute start of iPhone development.

Action Guide:

1. Verify system requirements for sdk are met.
2. Head to Apple’s iPhone Developer Center and download the SDK.
3. Download the Hello World sample application.
4. Open the Hello World project file.
5. Use the research assistant to learn about the iPhone  libararies.
6. Optional: Look through more source code examples and use the research assistant often.
