Easy iPhone Simulator Screenshots With Status Bar Removed

If you’ve had to take screenshots of the iPhone simulator you know what I am talking about.  Things just don’t look as good if you can’t see an iPhone in the image.

The problem is that when you want the simulator in the screenshot then you need to have some sort of solid background so that you can remove it afterwards, and you will need to select out the area of the screen with the simulator and then in your imaging program remove the statusbar.  This gets old fast if you are taking a lot of screenshots.

I found out about this great program that you simply load up and it will take a snapshot of the simulator statusbar removed, and if you want you can very quickly and easily take multiple screenshots.

The utility can be download here:
iPhone Simulator Cropper

Definitely a very handy tool.

Command-Shift-4, hit the spacebar, click on the simulator – screenshot created with transparency.

Control-Command-Shift-4, hit the spacebar, click on the simulator – same thing, but the bitmap data is now in your clipboard instead of saved to disk.

Command-Shift-4, then space, then click the simulator. Gives you a screenshot of the simulator with a transparent background. Unless I’m missing something, isn’t that what we want?

There’s an even easier method to get a screenshot with the iPhone in a transparent png file: After hitting “cmd+shift+4″ to get the screenshot cursor, hit “space”. Now the cursor changes and if you click on a window now (e.g. the simulator), you get a png with the window over a transparent background.

This feature is built into Mac OS X.

Press Cmd-Shift-4 at the same time
Now depress all keys and press the spacebar. Now click the window. Perfect window shot with transparency on the background.

Hmm.. for me it captures a rectangular area grabbing little bits.. on the roun ded edges of the simulator.. mac os x 10.6.. does it on both my macs. Odd very odd since I always though that is what it should do.

Thanks guys.. I uninstalled all the stuff I had for screencasting/screenshots which I downloaded when I first bought my macs. Now works without grabbing edges from the background.
