iPhone SDK Development Tutorial – First Step Towards The App Store

This tutorial is a first step towards getting an App in the Apple App Store. It is an extremely brief tutorial meant for those at the absolute start of iPhone development.

Action Guide:

1. Verify system requirements for sdk are met.
2. Head to Apple’s iPhone Developer Center and download the SDK.
3. Download the Hello World sample application.
4. Open the Hello World project file.
5. Use the research assistant to learn about the iPhone libararies.
6. Optional: Look through more source code examples and use the research assistant often.

I am also trying to create an iphone app, basically a gallery of similar photos. However I am extremely confused with Xcode and SDK in general. So basically I'm wondering if you or anyone actually, knows of a step-by-step (precise) tutorial to explain the iPhone SDK fundamentals. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am attempting to get started building iphone apps. I do not have a mac. So what are my options? I found that I can build an application using Eclipse and test it on a jail-broken iphone. Is there a way to port the results to a native mac environment and publish it? Another alternative I thought of is a mac virtual server with a hosting company. Is terminal access to a mac server enough or will the need of a UI clobber me? Thanks for the newbie help!

Hi Kate,

I'm not entirely sure how difficult it would be to port your work as most of the tools people created for creating iPhone apps on Jailbroken phones on WIndows were before the SDK was released, then ultimately given up on when the official SDK was released, and you need to be using only documented libraries. Unfortunately many have similar names etc. but you need to be using only the official ones. I was looking at a Google code project that was created this way, and unfortunately it would have needed to be mostly rewritten.

Sorry I'm not sure whether you can go through the signing process on a virtual server.

I actually bought a mac mini and downloaded the sdk. I've been busy, so I haven't done much on it. I bought a book now I am going to watch your new tutorials. Thanks :)

Thanks for the new video on Categories.
I have another suggestion, which I never see anyone making videos like this. I believe this will help all us learning programming when it comes to OOP, Objective-C and Cocoa.
And that is: Walk us through the entire process from start to finish with a small program (something very small). This way we can see the process of how the program starts out on paper and is designed in order to build.
For instance: A small calculator; where do you start? You need a 10 buttones for numbers that.... and so on. Just how you will lay out the Code for the program and the process of what is needed before you actually start coding.

Hey Retnuh, great suggestion, it is definitely in my plans to get into actual "app development" and create simple sample apps that users can take and tweak possibly into real apps that they could submit to the app store. Likely the first app, since I already have created one, will be a very simple soundboard app.

Was just building a foundation mainly right now to begin with, and trying not to organize my time best, but definitely as I see the views and visitors going up I am willing to spend more and more time on this.

Hi Mike, no games, although I have a couple "half written" networked internet games that I created while creating a networking suite for iPhone games. For sure though, you don't need the SDK or a Mac to just learn the "hard part" of developing games on the iPhone which is OpenGL ES (although you can use a library such as Cocoa-2D or something which is pretty easy to use) as you can get that running through Visual Studio.

I've been unable to work on my own apps as I got into doing some contract work that has been sucking up my time. There is just too much demand from organizations wanting apps created and modified for them.

I have some stuff I can use, but if I decide that I like developing for the sdk, I will definitely get it, well before I publish anything in the store anyways...

do you have any games out, by the way?

No problem Mike.. I wasn't sure there was really any demand for this stuff, but it seems like alot of people are interested so I will be picking up the pace on letting these tutorials out.

Gettin a mac is well worth it man, you can easily get the money back with the app store earnings, and it's good experience, and something you can put on your resume too if you care about that.
